As a social worker I have faced many issues with processes for those children who have been adopted and that after adoption services are absolutely lacking alongside specialist support for parents around trauma, managing behaviours linked with trauma. I believe anyone in the adoption process should have access to trauma informed training to help them have an understanding before the adoption starts and that parents have the right tools and support available to them throughout the process not just when in crisis. When hitting crisis it is often too late to turn things around for families and I have experienced so many family breakdowns which is traumatising for everyone; parents, siblings but again further rejection for the child who leaves the home. Often it is too little too late offered to families by professionals and as a social worker I have at times felt at a complete loss and sometimes like a failure too. Parents and children/young people must feel this tenfold as they watch their family unit break apart.
